In Spain, Breda is known mainly for its siege and its subsequent surrender to the Thirds of Flanders in 1625 - One of the key events of the 80-year war that began to take shape following the abdication of Emperor Charles V. Velázquez’s oil immortalisation is one of the Sevillian painter’s most iconic paintings and occupies a place of honour in the Prado Museum. The painting’s significance and beauty is such that the Breda Town Hall currently houses a replica of it.
