Van Garderen: “It’s a pity to slip it up a bit in the final”

Tejay Van Garderen (BMC), 2nd on GC at La Vuelta 2017: “You never know on days like today. I think Sky was happy to let the bonus slip away, because we were just 2 seconds behind the leader's jersey. It's not a big surprise, but it would have been different if we had fought for the stage win. We just wanted to stay safe. Rohan (Dennis) and Fran (Ventoso) fought hard to leave us in the front. Coming into the climb, I was in a good position and we could save energy in the first couple of km, not having to move up. It's a pity to slip it up a bit in the final, but I know I'm there to keep it up day by day. We are heading into the right direction.”
