La Vuelta celebrates its 75 th edition in 2020. Such celebrations, though arbitrary, inspire us to continue to move in what we feel is the right direction, and also to look back and take stock of what we have built and achieved along the way. Each route has had its own particularity and its own history. This year’s route, which will take off from Utrecht, one of the world’s cycling capitals, will be special, daring and fun. In other words, it will be representative of the “La Vuelta” brand.
Anyone who has visited the Netherlands knows what cycling means to the country. La Vuelta discovered this passion in Assen (2009), and we have dreamt of returning ever since. We do so now because we know what the territory can offer us, and what we can offer in return. Utrecht will go down in history as one of the cities to have hosted the three cycling Grand Tours, two of them with an Official Start.
La Vuelta remains faithful to its commitment to innovation and to its dedication to internationalisation. In 2020, we will undoubtedly be one of the most European events, visiting four EU countries: The Netherlands, Spain, France, and Portugal. Spain is still our home, the place that reminds us where we came from and where we are headed; but it also pushes us to grow as a competition and to take things even further.
In 2020, we will visit one of the most iconic peaks in world cycling, the Col du Tourmalet; we will trace an outline of Spain’s centre and its North, winding our way through the Basque Country, Navarre, Aragón, La Rioja, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Galicia and Madrid. We will discover new things. We will be moved. We will be amazed. With such unprecedented climbs as the Alto de Moncalvillo (Logroño) and the Laguna Negra de Vinuesa (Soria) as well as the renowned (and feared) giants including La Farrapona, Arrate, La Covatilla and l’Angliru. There will also be a decisive time trial that will culminate on one of our country’s most beautiful peaks: the Mirador de Ézaro, a 100% La Vuelta product. Our race is a celebration that spreads joy wherever it goes. This is how the 75 th edition of La Vuelta will be: a celebration for all we have experienced, and all we are yet to experience.
