18 MUNICIPALITIES ARE AWARDED THE ‘MÁS BICI’ 2026 QUALITY SEAL OF LA VUELTA

Key points:

  • This year, 18 new Spanish municipalities will be awarded the Más Bici 2026 quality seal of La Vuelta, joining the five that received it last year, thus forming a network of 23 recognised municipalities.
  • The group of municipalities that have been recognised with the Más Bici seal brings together large cities and small towns, reflecting the diversity of La Vuelta - a race that covers the entire length and breadth of the country.
  • The Más Bici quality seal is a distinction launched by La Vuelta as part of its La Vuelta es Más social commitment programme, that evaluates and recognises the cities that are committed to promoting daily bicycle use. With this initiative, La Vuelta seeks to inspire host cities to promote daily bicycle use among its residents, and to integrate cycling into their everyday lives.

With the La Vuelta es Más programme, La Vuelta hopes to create a lasting legacy and inspire values that bring people together beyond just the sport itself. One of the key pillars behind this global social initiative is the promotion of cycling as a mode of transport and a lifestyle, in conjunction with sponsors and host cities, connecting the champions’ bicycles with those of the general public.

It is with this goal in mind that the Más Bici seal was born in 2025, as a sign of recognition for municipalities committed to daily bicycle use. Through an evaluation process, the seal identifies and highlights good practices with regards to sustainable mobility and the promotion of cycling, while also identifying potential opportunities for improvement.

Launched in 2025, to mark the 90th anniversary of La Vuelta, the five cities present along the route of La Vuelta and La Vuelta Femenina by Carrefour.es, both in 1935 and in 2025, were the very first to be awarded the seal: Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, Valladolid and Zaragoza.

This year, La Vuelta has opened up the project even further, offering all the Spanish municipalities that have ever hosted the Spanish tour the chance to apply and prove their commitment to daily bicycle use.

As a result, today, just 50 days from the Grand Departure of La Vuelta from Monaco, La Vuelta has announced 18 new municipalities that have been awarded the Más Bici 2026 seal. These municipalities are: Benasque (Huesca); Benidorm, Calpe, Castalla, Orihuela, Torrevieja and Villena (Alicante); Capileira (Granada); Cartagena (Murcia); Ares del Maestrat, Castellón de la Plana and Lucena del Cid (Castellón); Guijuelo (Salamanca); A Coruña, Somiedo (Asturias); Valdeolmos-Alalpardo (Madrid); Villadiego (Burgos) and Vitoria-Gasteiz (Álava).

The group of municipalities awarded the Más Bici seal include both large cities and small towns, reflecting the diversity of La Vuelta - a race that covers territories all over the country and that wishes to encourage more and more people to incorporate cycling into their everyday lives. Regardless of their size, the municipalities all presented a dossier highlighting their cycling initiatives in five key areas: Governance, Infrastructure, Services and Education, Sports and Tourism.

These dossiers were evaluated by a jury consisting of cycling policy experts, including representatives from Spanish association Red de Ciudades y Territorios por la Bicicleta (RedBici) and the international consulting company Copenhagenize. The objective was to analyse the merits behind their initiatives, to recognise existing good practices and identify potential opportunities for improvement, thereby fostering a shared learning and positive emulation dynamic among the municipalities.

Detailed results of these evaluations can be seen on La Vuelta’s official website.
