"It’s incredible. I really didn’t expect this today. I even said in the team radio after 50 or 60 kilometres that today wasn’t my day; I wasn’t feeling good. Then I ended up in the break, and my legs came around a bit. I had two teammates in the break as well, which always helps. That made me feel a lot more comfortable in the breakaway, and it gave me a bit of time to relax if anything happened on the flat or in the descents today. They’ve done a super job, and having Tom [Gloag] there in the final made a big difference. This year, I had three months out whereI didn’t ride a bike at all after an accident. I really didn’t think I’d be here, and even competing for stages. I can’t believe it.
When you’re in a situation like that… I wish I had the same legs as Buitrago, because the attacks he puts in are incredibly strong. I need to be a bit more careful about when I use my effort. I knew I had one effort in me, and I wanted to use that effort to win the stage. When they went on the steep bit with about 12 kilometres to go, I really paced myself there, not to go into the red. I came back, and again having Tom there just gave us an extra bit of insurance. I actually told Tom he was gonna get the win today. He looked super strong. But in the end having the numbers they’re really paid in our favour. That last k went so quick, I can’t really remember what happened."
