Wout van Aert: "I felt really strong today"

“Now, I mostly feel painful legs; I thought it was a good opportunity for the break. With the jersey, it’s always difficult to sneak in, so I thought ‘why not try immediately?’ I was the whole day in the front, but it was quite the effort, so I probably paid it on the last climb but I’m still really happy with my performance. I felt really strong today. With Andreas [Leknessund] I had a really good companion from the start. It’s also pretty nice to see that he pulls it off in the end. He really deserves this victory. It was one of these days that I just really like.

It feels obviously better to lead the points classification instead of just wearing the jersey. We’re on a good way. We try to take as many points as possible. With Tadej [Pogacar] here we also have a clear competitor. It will be a big fight all the way but I’m ready for it. If Matthew [Brennan] turns out to be a competitor, even better! He’s my teammate so it would be nice to have him in the mix as well. But the most difficult will be to beat Tadej.”
