The history

Following its incorporation into the WorldTour peloton in 2021, Intermarché – Wanty was one of the teams to make its debut in La Vuelta 21. The Belgian team joined the professional peloton in 2009 under the name of Willems Verandas. Since then, it has maintained a strong team for the central-European country, accompanying riders from other nationalities in the fight to obtain partial victories and overall triumphs in one-week races.
Sponsored by the Intermarché supermarkets since 2021, the team continues to benefit from Wanty’s sponsorship, which has been with them throughout most of their successes. Their major victories include Enrico Gasparotto’s win at the 2016 Amstel Gold Race and, more recently, Taco van der Hoorn’s stage victory at the 2021 Giro d’Italia. The current Belgian squad features two riders who have claimed stage wins at La Vuelta: Estonian Rein Taaramäe (2011) and Dutchman Danny van Poppel (2015).
In 2022, young Eritrean Biniam Girmay achieved a spectacular triumph at Gent-Wevelgem. In 2021, the team also secured stage wins at both the Giro d’Italia, with Taco van der Hoorn, and La Vuelta, with Rein Taaramäe. Norwegian Odd Christian Eiking wore the red jersey for seven stages during La Vuelta 21 after taking the leader’s jersey at Rincón de la Victoria. In 2022, Louis Meintjes was victorious on the challenging slopes of Les Praeres, delivering another stage win for the team. Most recently, Rui Costa secured a stage victory at Lekunberri in 2023 by proving the strongest rider in the breakaway.
