Bahrain-Mérida faces its fourth season in the cycling frontline, after an interesting debut in 2017. Much like Astana has been doing over the past decade, the team represents an oil-rich country looking for a place on the global sport scene, under the initiative of Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa. The 30-year-old occasional triathlete is the son of the king of Bahrain, the president of the national Olympic Committee, the commander of the Royal Guard and, now, the owner of a cycling team backed by a consortium of Bahraini companies in a partnership with Taiwanese bicycle maker Merida. In 2020, the Formula 1 team and British automobile company, McLaren, became a new sponsor for the Asian group.

This change of sponsorship has been accompanied by signing a new team member and a new leader for the Grand Tour team: Spaniard Mikel Landa has taken over from Vincenzo Nibali, thus becoming the team’s new face. The Basque rider will aim to consolidate his position in the Bahrain team following years of changing teams although, at the moment, the team’s most recent joys have come mainly from Dylan Teuns, who obtained a stage victory in the Tour de France 2019 and wore the red jersey for one day of La Vuelta 19.
